About Maury

I began my law enforcement career with the Cleveland (MS) Police Department in 1973 after graduating from Delta State College with a Bachelor of Science degree in the newly created Criminal Justice program.  In 1977, I continued my career with the Jackson (MS) Police Department, where there has never been a dull moment.

One particularly frenzied day a fellow officer jokingly said “Tell me again why you became a police officer.” Wearily, I said “It seemed like a good idea at the time.” On that day and many others, it didn’t seem like such a good idea.

Some years later, I was inexplicably compelled to begin writing down some thoughts that seemed to come from out of the blue. Never having written anything before, I did not understand the ideas pouring out of me, nor did I know the significance of what I had written until And On the Eighth Day was finished. It was then that I understood: good idea or not, police work has always been my life’s calling, and the words I put to paper had come from the spirit of God.

At some of the police funerals I have attended, I have heard it said “Why did he have to be a cop, why couldn’t he just have had a normal job?” Now I know the answer to that question and many others which eluded me for so long.

Since writing And On the Eighth Day, I have been led to write other works. With the help of my wife, Bobbie, I have come to understand that when I am moved in this way, it is because God is whispering to me. I only write when inspired to do so and I take no credit for the results. The credit and the glory of His words belong to God. Perhaps you will hear Him whisper to your heart through these works.
